Recall the minor tempest last week when it became apparent that multiple downtown businesses in Greensboro were closing in part because of crime conditions and the pervasive homeless situation.
Yesterday, I received a mailer from Downtown Greensboro, Inc. that solicited residents to go downtown to enjoy the restaurants and shops.
And today, Fox8 reports that the Greensboro Police Department is assigning 26 police officers to patrol downtown. The timing is uncanny.
Of course, given the local political culture’s soft-on-crime posture, the open questions are how long the officers will be kept there; and what they will be permitted to do.
It is apparent, however, that the owners of downtown commercial real estate did some moving and shaking over the last several days. And the political leadership responded, at least temporarily… i.e., until the next racial incident occurs.
