I received a belated Christmas card today from a distant cousin in Brazil.
When my great-grandparents crossed the Atlantic with my maternal grandmother 125 years ago, the voyage was initially intended to meet family who had previously migrated to Brazil. The boat was turned away in Brazil because of a yellow fever epidemic, and headed to the United States instead. I consequently have many cousins in Brazil.
The card my cousin Mario sent me had a QR code that the recipient was invited to scan to enjoy some Christmas music. It directed me to Claudia Leitte’s rendition of Meu Menino Jesus (My Boy Jesus), a traditional Portuguese Christmas song. The lyrics in English are found here.
It’s a pretty good tune. The thumbs-up at the end must be internationally recognized:
A beautiful and holy song with an interesting history.
Glad you enjoyed it, Fred. I did also. I wonder how this song never became known much in our part of the world…
