There was news this week that the NC House Speaker Destin Hall has convened a committee to look at property taxes in the state.
This is a great idea. There are a couple of situations that ought to be remedied.
First, the massive increases some have faced because of property revaluations are a major issue. Because of steep increases in property values, we are being stuck with much higher taxes.
Second, more Marxists are being elected to city councils who will be tempted to use the property tax system to redistribute wealth even more than it already does. We have already seen this happen in the city of Greensboro.
It would be great to restructure state law to make sure that the tax can’t be used for more redistribution; and so that local government is required to set a revenue-neutral rate when valuations increase. I would also like to see the state cap property taxes so localities cannot tax above a certain predetermined rate.
Ideally, we would like to get rid of property taxes completely. It is wrong that government can take away your property if you are unable to pay the taxes.
I agree , TC. The confiscatory tax system in NC should be the subject of serious scrutiny by the legislators and possibly done away with . And by the way, citizens of Guilford can have their voices heard by saying no to the sales tax referendum.
I agree, Fred. We have seen our local elected officials treat the property tax as a plaything at their disposal. The trend has been established. Enough is enough.
