“The First Christmas”

When one hears that Kevin Costner had a special on ABC that purported to tell the real Christmas story, it is only natural to be skeptical. After all, Hollywood has been hostile to Christianity for many years; Costner has not always been a paragon of virtue; and ABC is owned by Disney which has been led by Jews for decades.

The program aired last night. Costner narrated parts; there was ample dramatization; and there was also interspersed throughout the program commentary from academicians and pastors. It was a two-hour presentation.

I am pleased to report that it was actually quite good. It definitely focused on some of the uglier and more difficult aspects of living in that part of the world two millennia ago. It attempted to present and explain people and places and events as they likely were. For instance, it was fairly striking to see Mary and Joseph depicted as young teens.

But the program appeared to be overall pretty sound biblically and historically. It is certainly possible to quibble over certain issues. (For instance, the Christian message of salvation through belief and repentance is not prominently emphasized.)

The question arises as to why Disney aired this program. Since Trump was elected, we have seen some institutions recalibrate somewhat more conservatively, and in at least somewhat of a more Christian direction. Trump’s people on the FCC have been threatening the major networks with the loss of their broadcast licenses. There were ample commercials; and Disney’s leadership must have perceived it was somehow in their best interests to air this program.

  1. That TC, is a good thing. Thanks for the review. I hope is re-broadcast. I too am surprised that ABC aired the program.
