The news today was that Governor Josh Stein is calling the General Assembly back into session to deal with Medicaid.
The General Assembly had adjourned after failing to pass a budget. There is a Medicaid funding shortfall compared with the promises made to beneficiaries; and Stein’s administration is threatening cuts. These cuts will affect at least some Medicaid recipients and “providers”.
The Republicans had gotten themselves into this mess by passing Medicaid expansion. Nonetheless, Stein’s extreme measure reveals his socialist pedigree. After all, according to that worldview, Medicaid is a sacred cow that demands extraordinary means to protect it.
The reality is precisely the opposite. In fact, Medicaid is an unconstitutional program that ought not even exist in its current form.
I hope the Republicans don’t cave.
TC, I also hope the GOP doesn’t get wobbly as they sometimes do. Yes, the Republicans agreeing to expand Medicaid was a serious mistake. For the next 3 years the General Assembly will have to pushback at Stein on how NC is governed=== Socialism or Freedom.
I don’t know how the Raleigh Republicans will handle this special session, Fred. But Stein is contemptible. Part of the motivation is the hospital systems not wanting to have their reimbursements cut.
