The Rhino Times reports that our county government will have a new department with seven employees dealing with various aspects of coordinating services for the homeless.
That means seven local people will have a vested interest in assuring that we continue to have large numbers of homeless people to serve; and that we attract more of them to our area.
It would be good if we had a more biblical model for serving those in need instead of perpetuating a problem that exists and making it more widespread. That is what has happened in Greensboro. Recall how Pastor Joe Rigney wrote about the sin of empathy; and how sober-mindedness is needed when making decisions of this type.
What would be a more biblical model?
Good question, Bell. First, providing temporary help instead of permanent assistance for those who are able-bodied. Second, as the apostle Paul said, he who does not work does not eat. Third, concentrate on populations identified in scripture as those most worthy of support– e.g., widows, ophans, etc. The biblical sober-mindedness Pastor Rigney calls us to heed requires that we refrain from creating dependency in those who can provide for themselves, and refrain from providing ongoing assistance to those taking advantage of the system.
