At a city of Greensboro mayoral forum, both candidates said they support avoiding property tax increases by making the rate revenue-neutral in response to property revaluations.
This is a positive piece of news. But it needs to be interpreted in the context of the larger picture.
First, we still might face property tax increases at the county level.
Second, water revenues are a major cash cow for the city of Greensboro. And the city tends to increase water rates nearly every year. This is the equivalent of a stealth tax increase.
Guilford County, on the other hand, does not have a comparable source of water revenue.
In any case, I would like to see both mayoral candidates commit to refrain from all types of tax and fee increases.
GETTING THE MAYORAL CANDIDATEES TO COMMIT TO THAT MAY BE A HARD SELL. THEY BOTH HAVE BEEN AT THE TROUGH FOR A LONG TIME.
They both said this is their position, Fred. But that doesn’t mean they will commit to seeing that position translated into policy. We shall see.
