I received a campaign mailer yesterday that supported the candidacy of Robbie Perkins for mayor of Greensboro. It touted his support for “affordable and attainable housing”. The PAC that produced and sent the ad was “Neighbors Helping NC”. A quick online search revealed that this is the PAC for the NC Realtors Association.
Perkins is a progressive Republican running against Marikay Abuzuaiter, the Democrat. This is one of those races in which it’s not clear that the Republican would be an improvement over the Democrat.
“Affordable housing” has become a huge buzzword in the current City Council elections, but it can mean anything. Does it mean transferring taxpayer money to those who have less? Does it mean loosening zoning restrictions to enable large multifamily projects, many smaller houses or much greater density?
George Hartzman has provided the campaign donors for Perkins thus far. It includes many large contributions from development-related interests.
Those figures speak so you can’t help but realize that Perkins is a bought and paid for hack.
It is also possible, Fred, that Marikay might be better than Perkins on the matter of crime and policing.
So far, I have noticed that the candidates have not included direct contact information so we can discuss issues with them.
It’s going to be tough to find good candidates for Greensboro City Council, John. There might be one or two worthy of supporting, and I will be posting about this more as the election season proceeds.
