Possible because govt privileged them with zero liability for the harm they caused. Govt privilege to corporation = corporatism = fascism.
It is pretty sobering, J. Sobran, to see how cynical those within the industry are about safety. It’s quite an eye-opener…
TC: My friend John, used to work for or consult J&J . I therefore took the liberty of sharing this post with him.
Here is his response:
” The tenor of this post is more meaningful than its content. Are we now going to hold scientists responsible for developing ineffective and/or unsafe medicines? Yes, it was a dud and had to be recalled after some 30 million doses were distributed. I don’t think we can be hard on the folks at J&J who developed the drug. The nation was facing a severe epidemic in which people were dying so fast that portable morgues were set up at most large hospitals.
The President and his aides, some of whom are worthy of criticism, leaned on the best and brightest among us to come up with vaccines, and several companies here and abroad answered the call. Still, more than 7 million people died from COVID-19, 1.2 million of them our friends, kin, and neighbors.
The story of how quickly vaccines were developed and used will be one of the milestones in medicine lectures taught at medical schools of the future. Among the wonders that helped to end the epidemic was the use of mRNA technology, a novel approach to using the human body’s own immune system to fight infections and diseases. The lessons learned during (and because of) the COVID epidemic that enabled the use of this technology are now being studied to address other forms of infections and diseases, including some of the deadliest.
Even the duds, like J&J’s mRNA product, moved the knowledge base forward and produced valuable data for those building on the discoveries of the period that were successful. As Churchill told us years ago, “Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.” Good advice for the J&J folks (and the rest of us).

Fred, I disagree with his contention that the mRNA vaccines helped to end the epidemic, although its availability did help tamp down some of the hysteria. It would be a major mistake to continue to allow mRNA technology to be introduced for other conditions.
