We had discussed previously that our corrupt hospital systems do not pay property taxes. That means the rest of us pay more to subsidize what they don’t pay.
But a recent Carolina Journal article discusses two more privileged industries that are shielded from property taxes. These include “affordable housing” and “solar energy electrical systems”.
80% of the property value of these “solar energy electrical systems” is excluded from taxation. I expect that means landowners have a huge incentive to convert the usage of their land away from agriculture and toward “solar farms” because they would pay much less tax.
The mess associated with “affordable housing” is another matter entirely.
Our state legislators have some work to do. Once again, the rest of us pay more because these privileged entities are politically shielded from paying their full property tax.
