“A Great Awakening”

I had the opportunity to see the movie, “A Great Awakening”, this past weekend. We had posted here trailers for this film previously.

In a nutshell, go see it. It is playing at local theaters, but I don’t know how long it will run.

The movie chronicles the life of George Whitefield (pronounced “Witfield”) who was born in England but who later conducted evangelical meetings throughout the American colonies during the decades prior to the Revolution. He was a powerful orator with skills honed through training as an actor.

He was born as a commoner but had the opportunity to attend Oxford University where he met a small group of Christians including Charles and John Wesley. They won his conversion and influenced his life dramatically.

The movie focuses intently on the relationship between Whitefield and Benjamin Franklin, who as a printer and newspaper publisher helped the evangelist publicize his meetings. It relates how Whitefield’s contribution to the Great Awakening helped lead to the Revolution and the formation of our constitutional Republic.

The movie is best described as historical drama with a Christian emphasis. I thought it was extremely well produced; and recommend it without reservation.

  1. As I am housebound I won’t be able to see the movie at a theater. Maybe it will be available via streaming. Sounds like a wonderful story.

    1. It was, Fred; and I’m sorry you can’t get out to see it. It seems certain that it will be available via streaming reasonably soon; and that would be great for folks in your situation– and for many others who prefer not to go to the theater.

  2. I love the acapella rendition of the song.

The Awakening wore off, and the sheep went back to sleep. The siren song of govt schools, Hollywood, and the Mockingbird media have us so sedated, so soporific, that indisputably criminal war and war crimes are committed, in our name and funded by us…and very little is said about the thousands of innocent victims or the guilt of our ruling class.

    1. Yes, J. Sobran, I agree the Awakening has worn off, in so many ways. I think the most alarming manifestation within our country is the fact that so many young women don’t want to marry and reproduce. That is an awful indicator of our future in this country.
