Another $21 Million Bond For The Coliseum

It seems that every 5-10 years, there is another demand for spending tens of millions to upgrade Greensboro’s coliseum complex. Like clockwork, another effort was announced within the last couple of weeks.

This time, the city wants $21 million to be financed with bonds that don’t have to be approved by voters.

We are told this is to remain competitive with arenas in places like Raleigh, Charlotte, Duluth, GA and Greenville, SC.

This is a great example of spending that causes upward pressure on property taxes. They can’t leave well enough alone. Frivolous spending afflicts local taxpayers.

This spending is intended to prop up commercial real estate interests and the local hospitality industry who depend on a full coliseum to fill up local restaurants and hotels.
