A great article at the Abbeville Institute discusses Senator Harry Byrd from the state of Virginia– a conservative Democrat who served in the Senate for decades and who resisted Roosevelt’s New Deal.
Byrd was a major institution in Virginia; and his machine was well known. He did not achieve as much national celebrity as Strom Thurmond or Jesse Helms but was cut from similar cloth. I remember hearing about Byrd during the seven years I lived in Virginia during the 1980’s and 1990’s. It is apparent from the article that Roosevelt hated him.
