Last year, the NC House passed a bill to require age verification and parental consent for kids using social media. In fact, it was passed overwhelmingly with bipartisan support.
It crossed over the NC Senate where it was stuck in the Rules Committee. That is the place where bills are sent to die.
Jeff Zenger is one of the “good guys” in the NC House; and he sponsored the bill. He was quoted saying that he now expects the bill to “move forward” in the NC Senate this year.
That would be a good thing. I hope he is correct.
The bill appears to be worthy of passage. What is the problem with it ?
I think some object to having to submit proof of age to the tech companies because it reduces anonymity for people who prefer to be anonymous. They say it is tantamount to establishing the precedent for Digital ID, and that it encroaches upon liberties. I think, Fred, this is something we have to accept to protect kids.
