He was very eager not to interfere with this fraud set-up:

Thank goodness for AUSA Joe Thompson and his relentless prosecutions which uncovered the massive fraud in Minnesota.
Seventy-eight indictments have been handed up in the Feeding Our Future case. Thompson has also announced the nature and magnitude of the new public-programs fraud cases he is pursuing. He has explained how he was led to them by the Feeding Our Future case itself. Indeed, the new cases feature some of the old defendants. One of the defendants was also convicted of attempting to bribe a juror.
What we have here is a new form of stolen valor. It must be hard for the legal team that has investigated, exposed, and prosecuted the case to hear politicians and others suggesting they were asleep at the wheel. They — I mean the legal team — must be nauseated.
Even if it sounds smarmy to say so, it would be nice if Thompson and his colleagues were thanked and encouraged. While others were dozing, looking the other way, or stealing, they were on the case. They have given up days, nights, and weekends to administer justice to the wide world of Minnesota fraud. If any other team had gotten this case, it would have gone nowhere. They would have charged five people and called it a day.

Thanks, Fred, for the additional context and information. These are truly despicable crimes. These people need to be sent back to Somalia.
