There were no major surprises in the Greensboro City Council primaries yesterday, although a few results might be predicting the general election results in one month.
Marikay Abuzuaiter outpaced Robbie Perkins by a healthy margin– seven points– in the race for mayor. The other two candidates drop out of the race.
Six candidates survive the at-large primary– Holston, Roth, Beard, Pinder, Allen and Bellamy-Small. Carla Franklin and several others did not make the cut.
Zack Matheny was trailing much of the night and barely outpaced April Parker by two points.
Adam Marshall unfortunately outperformed Nicky Smith by a landslide.
One theme emerges. Abuzuaiter and Parker were probably helped by the female vote preferentially voting for women. This could be a major factor next month.
I suspect the local Democratic Party and/or “the machine” might have been behind some of these results.
Nicky Smith has a big problem heading into the general election. Robbie Perkins has a problem also, albeit to a somewhat lesser extent.
Zack Matheny has typically been very strong at the polls; but Parker might potentially defeat him based on the primary result. It is possible he might have been hurt by the SBI investigation. While I view Parker as a fringe candidate, she received many votes in the primary. We shall see.
Nothing will change. Sadly overall everything will remain the same.
Unless, of course, it gets worse– and it might…
