Recall that Adam Marshall is the machine’s candidate for Greensboro City Council in district 4.
He had an ad in the News and Record this weekend. It states that he supports “Housing Down Payment Assistance Program for qualified service individuals including our first responders.”
Recall that the city council enacted this program whereby city employees and certain others based on need can qualify for down payment assistance. This ultimately will not be paid back, so it cannot be viewed as a loan. It is welfare.
This means Marshall is effectively buying votes.
In a low turnout election– as we have in Greensboro with the city council elections– the votes of city employees are potentially very important. You therefore have a framework in which these city employees potentially elect the city council based on whatever largesse is showered upon them. The firefighters’ union has been particularly active in city council elections in the past.
I will be voting for Nicky Smith in District 4. The primary is tomorrow.
If I still lived in the Peoples Republic of Greensboro I would be voting for Smith also.
Primary day is today. I voted this morning, Fred, and the polling place was deserted.
