Many people are likely unaware of the work of “Family Policy Councils” in many states that lobby state legislatures on family-related issues. Many are further unaware that these originated with Dr. James Dobson’s Focus On The Family.
This is excerpted from a statement by the NC Family Policy Council:
Throughout his life and ministry, Dr. Dobson faithfully served the Lord by promoting and defending families and Biblical Values.
Dr. Dobson’s lasting contributions to the world he has left behind are many, but a few noteworthy features of the legacy of faith he provided are the founding of Focus on the Family alongside his wonderful wife Shirley; starting, with other Christian leaders, The Family Research Council as well as the genesis of what eventually has become Family Policy Alliance and the Family Policy Council movement; and—with over 30 Christian leaders—Alliance Defending Freedom to provide legal defense for people of faith. All of these ministries were, and continue to be, focused on supporting and protecting and defending the sanctity of human life, religious freedom, marriage, and the family.
“Not only was Dr. Dobson a giant among national Christian leaders for decades, but he was also the voice of a gracious and loving friend, father, and grandfather who counseled and nurtured millions of families into stronger and more loving relationships,” said NC Family President John L. Rustin. “By the grace of God and through his commitment to the institutions of faith and family, Dr. Dobson leaves behind an impact and a legacy that will last generations. We pray for Shirley, and the Dobson family as they mourn his loss and celebrate his passage into eternity with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
The North Carolina Family Policy Council owes a great debt of gratitude to the faithfulness of Dr. Dobson, and we are a part of God’s grace and creative Spirit through Dr. Dobson’s ministry. The passing of James Dobson is a great reminder to us all to focus on the calling that God has placed on each our lives and to continually turn our hearts toward Him as we seek to serve Him daily.
Dr. Dobson was a a force in the 1980s for pushing conservative Christian ideals in American politics.
His impact endures through the many lives he touched, the families he strengthened, and the unshakable faith he proclaimed.
He faithfully taught families to walk with God, shaping generations with his message of faith, hope and love in Jesus.

Years ago, Focus on the Family’s email entreaties for folks to get with their representatives about a given issue was a major force for good.
