Yes indeed this will encourage pastors to deliver from the pulpit subjects that are biblically based and at the same time political .
It was interesting to learn about the history of the ” Johnson Amendment “
I think it should be clear, Fred, that not all pastors of conservative churches will do this– either because of fear of their own congregation, or because they secretly align with the left, or because they espouse J.D. Greear’s philosophy that speaking about politics should never take place because it might hinder evangelism.
My concern is that liberal churches, especially at election time, will evolve into political rally organizations overshadowing the religious mission of the church.
Local Dem activists already “work” these churches heavily for support.
This is true, JayCee, but as you suggest, they have already been doing this– especially in the black churches but also in other liberal churches. The white liberal churches’ activism historically has been cultural (which is upstream of politics), and could tilt even MORE political. Many of these churches are dying, of course.
Then there is the phenomenon of evangelical churches turning more liberal, which is another issue entirely.
