An article this morning describes interactions at a city council meeting last week. The topic was whether police should be disciplined for an unwanted interaction that took place in east Greensboro recently during a traffic stop.
But perhaps unintentionally, the writer of the article reveals some important aspects of this matter.
One public speaker at the meeting was the mother of the two of the young men involved. The woman had a hyphenated last name. Lets say her surname is Smith-Jones.
The article then named her two sons. Let’s say their surnames were Myers and Pruitt, respectively.
She had two surnames because of the hyphenation– and neither of these matched the surnames of either of her two sons.
And therein lies much of the problem. We can’t know the precise circumstances, but it seems likely that these two sons had not been raised in an intact two-parent family with both their mother and biological father.
It was also revealed in the article that a gun and ammunition were found in the car. It is entirely possible this maligned police officer might have prevented a murder from taking place. The mother apparently was not asked during the council meeting why her sons were driving around with a gun and ammunition.
Ten people spoke from the floor on this topic. These are probably the same people who demand action and express upset when there is a cluster of murders that take place; but they are unwilling to allow the police to do their jobs.
Please let the police do the policing and stop whining.
Amen, Fred. These people are tiresome.
