Duke Energy Had To Switch To Coal During Recent Heat Wave

An interesting article from Carolina Journal describes what happened in our area during the month of June when we faced a severe heat wave.

The U.S. Department of Energy issued an emergency order allowing Duke Energy to exceed certain emissions levels if necessary to provide reliable power. In response, Duke Energy’s use of coal rose by 30 percent. Use of solar as a share of the total power generated shrunk.

The article points out we will be losing those coal plants under the state’s Carbon Plan. I hope that changes.

  1. Hopefully this will be noted and weighted by decision makers. It isn’t a trivial matter. State’s Carbon plan (passed by a previous squishy Republican Gen. Assembly) should be deleted.
