Readers might recall I have highlighted here previously the group Abolish Abortion NC. It turns out this group has intervened with the Baptist state convention of North Carolina– now called “North Carolina Baptists”– and it passed a strong resolution in support of making abortion illegal in the state of North Carolina. This happened several days ago.
The Dissenter had reported this story earlier this week.
The text of the resolution is found at the Abolish Abortion NC website. Parts of the resolution read as follows:
WHEREASÂ since 1974 the number one cause of death annually in North Carolina continues to be legalized abortions happening in accordance with current North Carolina laws; and since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, there has been slow political resolve to see abortion outlawed in North Carolina; and… (Isa. 10:1-3, Jas. 4:17, Hab. 1:2-4, Rom. 13:3-4, Job 34:10-21, Prv. 25:26)
RESOLVEDÂ that we as the messengers of the BSCNC meeting November 6-7, 2023 in Greensboro, NC, will advocate for the equal protection of the preborn and justice under our laws, that we will not stop in our legal efforts until the day when abortion is both illegal and unthinkable; … (1 Cor. 5:6-7, Ps. 89:14, Mic. 6:8, Prv. 31:9, 2 Tim. 4:2, Acts 10:42, Acts 20:27, Mrk. 13:10)
There is more.
This is very encouraging for at least a couple of reasons.
First, the state Baptist convention of Southern Baptists in North Carolina has taken a firm stand and adopted a Biblically rigorous public position in the face of Republican legislators in Raleigh who passed a half-hearted pro-life bill earlier this year that legalized abortion to the 13th week of pregnancy.
Second, this is a good recovery after that same state Baptist convention had remained supine in the face of Governor Cooper’s shutdown of churches during March of 2020.
And third, this action is in marked contradistinction to the mess we have witnessed at the national level where the center/ left has overtaken the Southern Baptist Convention.
This is worthy of celebration. Good job, Abolish Abortion NC and North Carolina Baptists.
Congratulations passing this resolution. I hope we will see a down-tick in the number of abortions as a result.
I hope so also, Fred. And I hope the Raleigh Republicans do their part during 2024 in response to this resolution.
