George Orwell was a socialist. He also was against totalitarianism and communism. This suggests some naivete on his part, because socialism inevitably degenerates to these things.

“Don’t let it happen ” This was Orwell’s important warning about the loss of freedom and democracy. 1984 captures many worrisome current trends. It is crucial that Americans today heed Orwell’s warning. It may sound silly that a book written 74 years ago could predict the future, but the truth is that Orwell’s dystopia has become, in certain ways, a reality in our own day.
