I had reported here a couple of weeks ago that a three-way Senate race might assure that McCrory gets the nomination. After all, the recent polling results combined with his name recognition as a former governor suggest that he has a definite advantage. He would not be the first left-of-center Republican in the US Senate representing North Carolina. The splitting of the conservative anti-McCrory vote might prove to be his ticket.
There is a contrarian view, however. The Daily Haymaker feels that McCrory is sinking, and that the most recent poll results are a bad omen for him. That interpretation might turn out to be correct.
We have seen this story play out previously, however, on multiple occasions. Multiple conservatives knock each other out while the sole establishment progressive prevails. And at times, it has seemed that certain candidates were deliberately positioned in primary races to act as a spoiler.
I am not suggesting that is happening in this U.S. Senate primary. Nonetheless, it will still be possible for certain establishment forces to prop up Walker's candidacy to help McCrory. Will that happen; and is it indeed happening at this very moment? I don't know.
The Carolina Journal had an interesting article regarding this race. Note the following excerpt:
John Snyder, a Mecklenburg county supporter of Walker tells CJ, “We have three great top candidates, but Mark has the broadest appeal that represents Republican ideals. He understands that leading requires consensus-building, not enemy-making.”
After three decades of enormous progressive/socialist gains, I don't think we need consensus-building. I don't think we need to maintain the current status quo, and make sure the other side is able to influence the course of events. Instead, I think we need to win back much territory that had been lost... and then some. I think we need someone who will fight to prevail.
I know many Walker supporters of good will-- friends I love and respect-- feel differently. And yes, Walker would be better than McCrory. But I will be voting for Ted Budd.
