There were a couple of notable items in the news recently regarding our public schools.
First, our esteemed Governor Roy Cooper proposed that teachers in the state of North Carolina should be given $2,500 BONUSES because of their extra efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
And second, the chairman of the Guilford Board of County Commissioners, Skip Alston, has requested that the governor set aside 15,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses for teachers and other staff within the Guilford County Schools system.
Cooper wants the teachers to get bonuses even though, in organized fashion, they had refused to return to the classroom-- and even though "the science" that is supposed to be dispositive recommends otherwise. Alston wants them to get the vaccine preferentially even though there are many others at much higher risk who have not yet been able to get vaccinated-- and even though "the science" ordains that the vaccine is most needed in high-risk populations. Yes, some teachers and other employees of the county school system are likely at high risk, but other accommodations or special arrangements can be made for them. Of course, that has not been publicly discussed because it would have facilitated the reopening of the schools sooner, and they did not want that.
What really should happen with the Guilford County school system? One article indicates that school systems ought to be required to refund taxpayers since they had refused to go back to teaching in the classroom.
Imagine that-- the Guilford County Schools system refunding taxpayers because they would not deliver the services promised. That is what ought to happen.
Instead, we have Cooper seeking to reward them with bonuses; and Alston trying to reward them with preferential arrangements for vaccinations.
This is what you get when you put jackasses in positions of power. And that is what we have had, seemingly, for decades almost without interruption.
Up is down. Black is white. E=MC2 is a lie

Fred, for these folks, any manipulation or falsehood is justified even while claiming to embrace science, as long as their own political interests are being pursued. There is more to this story because Alston successfully got the county health department to set aside thousands of doses for the school system employees. Presumably, they are being vaccinated before many others statewide whose age and/or medical circumstances justify it much more. This is breathtaking corruption.
