The Guilford County Board of Education, regarding fundamental cultural and political matters that impact the operation of our government schools, is almost always wrong. And the election of several Republicans to the Board has not changed that dynamic even one iota.
Last week, the school board passed an absolutely idiotic resolution. It was, in fact, an affectation putatively expressing concern about the prevention of school shootings. Check this out:
The resolution addresses multiple issues, including gun laws, enhancing security and proactive efforts to prevent individuals from becoming violent. It also states opposition to the idea of arming teachers.
Among the calls for action are:
- Requiring and strengthening background checks prior to purchasing firearms;
- Appropriating new funds to make building and technology alterations to better secure schools
- Appropriating additional funds for mental health services and personnel in schools; and
- Reviewing and strengthening the nation’s mental health system and greater funding for community-based services and supports for individuals and families.
This was a very interesting effort. It calls for bigger government and more spending. It seeks to restrict Second Amendment gun rights, even though all of these school board members presumably had taken an oath to support the Constitution.
But what is glaringly absent? There is no acceptance of responsibility to take actions within their own domain to enhance school safety and security. They appear utterly uninterested in using their current bloated budgetary allotments to achieve secure schools. The answer is always more money. (Of course, they did virtually nothing to intervene when local schools were permitting students to leave class against the usual rules to demonstrate against guns.)
Let's contrast this with the measures taken in Rockingham County by Sheriff Sam Page. He immediately started a program that uses volunteer former law enforcement officers and military officers to cover the schools.
That is quite a contrast.
The Guilford County School Board delivered a purely political statement with purely political objectives. Page effected a program that could work, almost instantaneously, and laid the politics aside.
The Guilford County School Board made a money grab. Page devised a solution that would not require huge amounts of money.
The Guilford County School Board artfully washed their collective hands of responsibility, much like Pontius Pilate during Holy Week. Page took responsibility, and stepped up.
I should note incidentally that the Guilford County School Board is anti-Christian; whereas Page is a Christian.
The philosophies of democratic socialism and cultural Marxism find full expression on the county school board. As Rahm Emanuel once suggested, every crisis is regarded as an opportunity.
