An interesting story at the Greensboro News and Record website indicates that a group of five left-of-center groups is sponsoring an event at a local synagogue (of course) to take North Carolina Republicans to task for their proposed judicial reforms. State legislators are invited, and will be mocked with an "empty chair" visual if they do not show for the event.
Those on the far left end of the political spectrum view the judiciary as their ace-in-the-hole. They now perceive judicial activism as something to which they are entitled. It has become so prevalent and pervasive that they cannot imagine life without it.
In fact, the Republicans' proposed judicial reforms have a partisan bent, but do not entirely address the issue of judicial activism. Their reforms presume that Republican judges will rule in a constitutional manner; but we have learned the hard way that is not necessarily true. The Republicans should do much more to make judicial activism illegal; hold judges accountable; and assert the sovereignty of the state of North Carolina against a power-grabbing federal judiciary.
The situation has become so bad that we really ought to restrict from the judiciary anyone who has attended an American law school. That sounds absurd; but in fact, these institutions train and indoctrinate students on matters such as the "living constitution", judicial supremacy and stare decisis. The Republicans ought to take direct aim at the state's law schools because these are the breeding grounds for the contagion we witness in the courts.
In any event, the lefty-sponsored and hosted exercise in Greensboro later this week protests Republican judicial reforms that are fairly weak and insufficient. But that does not prevent the event's sponsors from trying to create a huge media spectacle because they know they will receive sympathetic coverage.
