Article XI, Section 4 of the Constitution of the State of North Carolina:
Beneficient provision for the poor, the unfortunate, and the orphan is one of the first duties of a civilized and a Christian state. Therefore the General Assembly shall provide for and define the duties of a board of public welfare.
The logic is pretty transparent. The authors of the state constitution-- and the people who enacted it-- felt that North Carolina is a Christian state; and they incorporated that assumption into this particular provision.
This extraordinary language remains in the state constitution to this day.
Imagine how saddened our progressive friends must feel when they learn that the entire constitutional basis for state charity on behalf of the needy in North Carolina is Christian duty. Never mind the theological validity of the premise that taxpayers must be forced to provide for the needy. That is another debate entirely.
But note how the separationists among our progressive friends refrain from calling for the repeal of this particular provision in the state constitution-- even though it suggests that the state has an established religion.
I feel much more welcome now.
Thanks,
g

In fact, George, North Carolina has been VERY welcoming to atheists, agnostics and folks with a Jewish background.

That's what a lot of Islamist and Christian governments have said over the centuries to Jews, until the Jews got booted and had their property confiscated.

George, what makes you feel that is likely to happen in North Carolina?
