This is homecoming weekend at NC A&T University in Greensboro. It should be noted that taxpayers' money likely supports these festivities-- at both the state and local level.
A homecoming concert is being staged at the Greensboro Coliseum on Saturday night. Among the musical guests is a rap artist from Memphis, Tennessee named "Juicy J".
Part of Juicy J.'s repertoire is a song called "Bandz a Make Her Dance". The piece contains ample vulgarity, profanity and obscenity. It generously incorporates racial slurs; and makes repeated slang references to the female anatomy in a denigrating manner. The piece overall objectifies women. The lyrics are found here; but be forewarned, because it is awful.
Our wonderful Coliseum is the venue for such an artist; and the NC A&T Homecoming team, with intentionality, invites him to perform. (You can probably assume that the Tanger Performing Arts Center will be pleased to host such artists in the future.)
Of course, we are helping to pay for this kind of trash.
The NC A&T Homecoming tends to get a lot of favorable attention locally. But perhaps we need to know more about the seamy underside, and the types of destructive cultural attitudes that are blithely tolerated.
