The Southern Coalition for Social Justice ought to ring a few bells. It has represented the Democratic point of view by filing lawsuits on matters such as voter ID and gerrymandering. The depths of disingenuousness and hypocrisy cannot be overstated; but the group has succeeded in finding sympathetic judges within the federal judiciary. It also fought in court against the re-opening of the White Street Landfill to residential waste within the last decade here in Greensboro.
The group is copiously funded by various old-line liberal mainline Protestant and Jewish donors and their foundations. One of these is George Soros. They have eight staff attorneys and a couple of directors, one of whom is Ms. Anita Earls.
(Incidentally, the old stereotype about Jewish folks being cheap or stingy is entirely unfair. They tend to be extremely generous when it comes to funding entities such as this one that advance their political and/or cultural worldview).
The coalition claims to support "human rights". However, I have not seen that they devote a great deal of attention to protecting orthodox Christians with recent threats to their religious liberty; second amendment rights; property rights; states' rights; or even privacy rights against overbearing governmental entities. Instead, they focus on the typical democratic socialist claptrap.
The Raleigh News and Observer, in a loving portrait, reports that Ms. Earls is running to oppose Justice Barbara Jackson, a Republican, on the North Carolina Supreme Court. If Ms. Earls were to win, that would make the court 6-3 in favor of the democratic socialists. And there would be little doubt as to the nature of her agenda.
The problem, of course, is that Marxism is inconsistent with the principles of the American founding and the United States Constitution. That has not, however, precluded victories among its adherents in North Carolina and throughout the country. And many of those victories have been consummated in our legislatures, our executive branches, and yes, our courthouses.
