I invite readers to check out a nifty side-by-side, point-by-point comparison of Obamacare with Paul Ryan's bill, which is affectionately known as "Ryancare", "Obamacare Lite" or "Obamacare 2.0". The document was prepared by the Texas Public Policy Foundation. It makes it easy to see why constitutional conservatives who value limited government are so upset with Mr. Ryan.
Fortunately, Trump and a group of Senators are trying to develop a way forward that moves away from Ryan's approach. Major changes to the bill are being contemplated according to CNN. The president must have been influenced by the damaging report released by the Congressional Budget Office earlier this week.
But we cannot presume that the new bill, if developed, will be entirely clean. CNN reports:
This (administration) official confirmed that the White House has continued to advocate for changes to the bill that will help secure conservative votes in the House -- but also some tailored to moderates' concerns.
It is difficult to know at this point what that means. But it seems to fall short of what had been promised over several election cycles.
Update 03/16: Trump offered additional comments last night in Nashville.
