We learn of a new, earth-shaking cataclysm affecting the city of Greensboro.
Six minority trainees dropped out before completing the training program. We are to believe the group of new firefighters is far too white.
We are also expected to believe that the six trainees who dropped out had been somehow handled or treated inappropriately. The situation is deemed to justify major recruitment efforts to lure more minority firefighters.
Where does this ultimately lead? A loosening of standards. We will likely see surreptitious efforts to adopt lower standards in order to attract and retain more minority firefighters. That is essentially what happened in the police department.
Let's remember that our mayor is owned-- lock, stock and barrel-- by the Pulpit Forum. This is classic, urban Democratic politics at work.
It is not regarded as sufficient merely to accept applications passively from those who are truly motivated to be a firefighter, and who are more likely to succeed. We must go and seek out those who do not possess this inner motivation, or who are less likely to be successful.
As long as we understand the ground rules, we can know what outcomes to expect in the long run.
